This course provides an overview of the renewable energy sector as it relates to coastal contexts. It reviews the history of renewable energy development, the technological options and transmission challenges relevant to the coastal setting. It confronts students with environmental and socio-cultural impacts, as well as options for risk mitigation. It examines how renewable energy fits into community development and marine spatial planning. Case studies help illustrate the experience and challenges coastal regions have already faced. The course is grounded in theory and applied learning opportunities that enable students to assess renewable energy issues with professional tools and other applied resources.

Kennsluskrá

On completion of the course a student:

  • can describe the social, political, cultural, and environmental issues related to renewable energy development, in general and specific to coastal areas
  • can interpret various frameworks for predicting environmental responses to renewable energy development.
  • can identify processes that support community and stakeholder engagement in renewable energy development.
  • has demonstrated an understanding of the renewable energy development process through case study analysis and development of a renewable energy project.

 

Prerequisites: No prerequisites registered for the course

Assessment: 10% Class participation; 30% Marine Renewable Energy Brief and discussion; 60% MRE Development Proposal and presentation.

Final Exam: Assignment
