The University Centre offers students access to reading spaces, printing facilities, and wireless internet. The UW library includes study booths, but distance learners are also welcome to use various other spaces within UW for studying, working on projects, or holding meetings. The building has several classrooms used for teaching during the day, which can be used by distance learners as study and work areas once classes are finished.
Vestrahús, the University Centre building, opens at 08:00 and is locked after 16:00 each day. The reception is staffed between 08:30 and 13:30. To access the building outside these hours, students can request a key card from the services manager. The building’s security system is active from 02:00 to 06:30. If students plan to be in the building at night, they must notify staff so that arrangements can be made regarding the security system.
The staff at the University Centre oversee exams on behalf of all universities in Iceland, and all university-level students can apply to take their exams at the University Centre of the Westfjords. Distance learners who wish to take exams in Ísafjörður can use this service, which is also available in Patreksfjörður and Hólmavík.
If a student wishes to take an exam at UW, it is very important to first contact their university and complete the appropriate registration process for distance exams. Additionally, the University Centre of the Westfjords must be registered as the exam location in Ugla (the university system).
Students taking distance exams at UW need to bring their own computer equipment and make sure the computer and LockDown browser is up to date and ready to use.
Hjördís Þráinsdóttir, project manager at UW, is responsible for overseeing distance exams for university students, whether they choose to take the exam in Ísafjörður, Patreksfjörður, or Hólmavík. If any questions arise, you are welcome to get in touch by email.
More information about facilities and exam services can be found on the University Centre of the Westfjords’ website. There you can also find a list and price list of various basic services available to students, such as key cards for building access, coffee cards, and more.
