The University Centre of the Westfjords (UW) is a partner in the “Máltæknikjarni” project, or "Language Technology Development Initiative" led by the University of Iceland. The project aims to develop accessible, cost-effective, and location-independent methods for language acquisition — including remote learning, testing, and skill certification. Part of this work is directly connected to the Westfjords and UW.
One key example is distance education in Icelandic as a second language, led by Ólafur Guðsteinn Kristjánsson, a lecturer at the University of Iceland who is based in Ísafjörður and works from UW. Though the program is delivered remotely, students in the region benefit from having a local teacher available for personal guidance — a rare advantage in distance learning.
The need for high-quality Icelandic instruction has grown alongside demographic changes in Iceland. Fortunately, access to such programs is steadily improving. At the University of Iceland, both in-person and remote study options are available, including a 60-credit practical diploma program in Icelandic as a second language. Many students complete the program alongside work, and graduates often describe it as an effective starting point for using Icelandic confidently in everyday life.
UW serves as a local support center for students in the region, handling practical matters and exams. Ólafur is regularly present at UW and is available to answer questions or provide support. You can contact him at olafurgk@hi.is.
The application deadline for residents of Iceland with an Icelandic ID number is May 20.
