Students who began their master’s studies in Coastal and Marine Management and Coastal Communities and Regional Development at the University Centre of the Westfjords in August, along with master’s students from SIT (School of International Training), were recently invited on a new-student trip to help the group get to know one another. The academic directors of both master’s programs, Brack Hale and Randall Morgan Green, joined the group, as well as Jill Welter, the SIT group instructor, and Íris Hrund Halldórsdóttir, who taught the University Centre master’s students during their first week.

The group departed by bus from the University Centre on the morning of Saturday, August 30, heading first to the Mjólká hydropower station for a short visit and tour. They then stopped at Dynjandi, where students were able to hike up along the waterfalls, take photos, and enjoy the natural surroundings. After that, the group continued to Þingeyri, where the hosts at Simbahöllin served a delicious vegetable soup with bread, followed by tasty chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

Following the stop in Þingeyri, the group went on to Holt in Önundarfjörður for a beach walk. This turned into a very memorable experience when several dolphins appeared—almost as if on cue—and performed for the guests, which was considered a real highlight.

The first week of the master’s programs at the University Centre was busy, with two courses running simultaneously and students beginning to adjust to life in a new country. The trip therefore provided a welcome break, giving students the chance to do something fun together, get to know one another better, and, of course, to connect with the academic directors who will guide them through the next two years of their master’s studies.
