From October 5–16, students at the University Centre of the Westfjords participated in the course Coping with Disasters, taught by Dr. Uta Reichardt. The course explored how individuals, communities, and societies prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters, with a particular focus on resilience and the factors that influence a society's ability to cope with crises.
Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, including earth sciences, environmental studies, sociology, psychology, and cultural studies, the course introduced students to key concepts in disaster research and management. Students examined how vulnerability to natural hazards is shaped by social, environmental, and institutional factors, and how preparedness, monitoring, early warning systems, and effective planning can help reduce the impact of disasters.
An important aspect of the course was understanding the human side of disasters. Students explored the role of psychological first aid, communication, media, art, and spirituality in helping individuals and communities cope with hardship, trauma, and loss. The course also highlighted the importance of effective crisis communication and creative approaches to disaster preparedness and recovery.
The course was taught by Dr. Uta Reichardt, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Sustainability Studies at the University of Iceland. Her research explores the connections between science, art, and sustainability, with a particular focus on disaster risk reduction. She is also a co-founder of Disaster Studios, a platform bringing together design and disaster risk management to explore creative, evidence-based solutions.
Through the course, students developed their understanding of disaster management and societal resilience while learning to critically assess the complexities of disaster response. They also explored how to develop crisis communication strategies and disaster response concepts aimed at supporting communities in the aftermath of extreme events.
By combining scientific perspectives with social and creative approaches, Coping with Disasters provided students with a multidisciplinary understanding of how communities can strengthen their resilience and better prepare for future challenges.
