A New School Year Begins at UW
A new school year is underway at the University Centre of the Westfjords, and we are delighted to welcome a new group of students to Ísafjörður and to UW.
The semester began with Orientation Days on Friday, August 21, and Saturday, August 22, giving our new students a chance to settle in, meet one another and get to know the University Centre before classes began.
On Friday, Catherine Chambers, Director of UW, and Astrid Fehling, Administrative Director, welcomed the students and introduced them to the University Centre and the semester ahead. They were followed by Academic Directors R. Morgan Greene and Dr. Brack Hale, who introduced the academic programmes and their roles at UW.
The students then had the opportunity to introduce themselves and begin getting to know their new classmates. After the more formal introductions, everyone headed outside for some games and activities before having pizza for lunch. It was a relaxed and enjoyable start to the semester and a good opportunity for the new cohort to begin forming connections.
Orientation continued on Saturday, when students were introduced to the many practical aspects of studying and living in Ísafjörður and what they can expect during their time at UW.
On Monday, August 24, the academic part of the semester officially got underway as students began the Academic Writing Workshop with Academic Directors Dr. Brack Hale and R. Morgan Greene. The course is taught as a series of seminars throughout the semester and introduces students to different aspects of academic work at the graduate level.
The workshops will cover academic writing, literature reviews, abstract writing, paper review and critical thinking, as well as data visualisation. With plenty to learn and new routines to settle into, the students certainly have a busy start to the semester ahead of them.
It is always a particularly happy time at UW when a new cohort arrives and the building fills once again with students from different places and backgrounds. We look forward to getting to know our new students over the coming months and wish them all a warm welcome to UW, Ísafjörður and the Westfjords.
