Lunch Lecture: A changing Arctic Ocean: People, Industries, and the Future

Julia will take us on a journey to the Arctic Ocean. She will first describe the ongoing changes in the natural environment that can affect coastal communities in the European North. Afterwards, she will discuss the significance of these changes for future development in the Barents region, with a particular focus on tourism and the Arctic Sea routes.

Julia Olsen is an Associate Professor of Environmental Sociology at Nord University, Bodø, Norway. For the past 10 years, she has researched coastal communities in the Arctic with a particular focus on adaptation to multiple changes and viability. Her PhD focused on how increasing sea traffic in the Arctic affects nature and small local communities. Julia participates in several international research projects investigating sustainable transport, tourism, and marine pollution in Northern Norway and Svalbard.

The presentation will take place in the cafeteria at the University Centre of the Westfjords and will start at 12:10. The presentation will also be streamed via a Zoom link, which can be found here: https://eu01web.zoom.us/j/69947471079
