The University Centre of the Westfjords welcomes guests to a lunch lecture with Martyn Jones, staff member at Hafró, who will provide an engaging overview of ongoing research activities at the Marine & Freshwater Research Institute (Hafró) in Ísafjörður.

Hafró operates eight stations around Iceland, outside its main headquarters in Hafnarfjörður, and among them, the Ísafjörður station stands out as the largest in terms of staffing and project diversity. Home to a dedicated team of seven employees, the Ísafjörður station contributes to a wide range of research efforts. During the lecture, Martyn will highlight selected projects that showcase the station’s role in Icelandic marine science, including benthic sample analysis, seafloor image annotation, and participation in research expeditions.
As a graduate of the Coastal and Marine Management program, Martyn brings personal experience from within Hafró’s scientific community. He participated in the institute’s spring population assessment survey in 2020, later returned as a summer student working on seaweed research in 2021, and has been employed as a research technician at Hafró since 2024. His presentation will offer both professional insight and a firsthand perspective on the research underway in the Westfjords. The lecture will be held in english
