We are pleased to welcome Olivier Rocher from Lycée de la mer – The High School of the Sea in Sète, France, to our weekly lunch lecture. He will present his institution and its involvement in European programmes that aim to engage pupils and students in an international approach to training and education.
France has developed an interesting system of vocational education where specialised high school programmes, preparatory courses, and university studies are closely interconnected. At Lycée de la mer – The High School of the Sea, students can follow specialised three-year vocational tracks at the secondary level, for example in Fishing, Maritime Electromechanics, Boating, and Mariculture. The school also offers two-year BTSM/BTSA programmes – one step closer to university education – with specialisations in Aquaculture on the one hand and Fisheries and Marine Environmental Management on the other.
Lycée de la mer is connected with the University Centre of the Westfjords through a European network in aquaculture education. The school’s deputy director and teachers have visited both the University Centre and the Ísafjörður High School (MÍ). A considerable part of the aquaculture-related programmes consists of internships, and they see great potential for their students to gain valuable hands-on experience with companies here in the Westfjords.
Olivier Rocher has been an English teacher for 24 years – first in an agricultural school and, since September 2024, at the maritime school in Sète. He is also responsible for the school’s international affairs. He studied languages (English and Italian) at Toulouse University, where he obtained a Master’s degree in English. Since 2014, he has also been involved in the Eurovision Song Contest, working as a journalist and translator.
The presentation will take place in the cafeteria at the University Centre of the Westfjords and will start at 12:10. The presentation will also be streamed via a Zoom link, which can be found here: https://eu01web.zoom.us/j/69947471079
