From September 21 to October 2, students in the Coastal and Marine Management master’s program at the University Centre of the Westfjords took part in the course Coastal and Marine Management: Theory and Tools, taught by Dr. Fiona Beaty.
The course introduces students to the concepts, principles and challenges involved in managing coastal and marine areas and resources. Particular emphasis is placed on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and how approaches to coastal management have developed at different scales, from local communities to international governance.
Throughout the two-week course, students explored a range of management theories, strategies and practical tools, as well as case studies illustrating the challenges that arise when ecological, social, cultural and economic interests intersect in coastal areas. Collaboration, integrated decision-making and innovative governance approaches were central themes.
The course provides an important foundation for students at the beginning of the Coastal and Marine Management program, giving them tools to analyse complex coastal issues and to consider how integrated management plans can respond to competing uses and interests.
