Course: Coastal and Marine Management: Theory and Tools

The management of coastal marine areas and resources requires cross-disciplinary research coupled with comprehensive and integrated approaches. This course is designed to introduce the concepts, principles, processes, and challenges of coastal and marine management through a review of the history and development of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) at a variety of spatial scales – local to global. It examines an overview of different theories, management strategies, and practical approaches. Further, it reviews select case studies to illustrate the challenges of different approaches and products. This course provides students a breadth of understanding and a strong foundation upon which to build through the rest of the program.
