In the history of Icelandic literature, the creative power of the Westfjords is striking. The purpose of the symposium is to explore the great subject, also in order to draw a map of some of those manuscripts and literary works from medieval times to modernity that surface from the Deep of Ísafjörður. The symposium is part of the project Perceiving the Creative Power of the Westfjords, its objective being to gather material for a book on the history of literature and culture in the Westfjords-region. The project draws on the experience of The Icelandic Field School, an annual summer course held in the Westfjords (2008‒2015) by the Department of Icelandic Language & Literature, University of Manitoba, and the collaboration established during those summers between the department and the University Centre of the Westfjords. The benefactor of the project is Guðmundur Hálfdánarson, Dean of Humanities and Jón Sigurðsson Professor at the University of Iceland, and the project managers are Birna Bjarnadóttir and Ingi Björn Guðnason, literary scholars.
