This course introduces sociological perspectives on rural and remote communities with an emphasis on the multifaceted tension between social structure and individual agency, solidarity and conflict, and local revitalisation in an era of intensified globalisation.

Hæfniviðmið

On completion of the course, a student:

  • can describe and discuss sociological perspectives in connection with rural and remote communities.
  • can identify the tensions between social structure and individual agency, solidarity and conflict.
  • can identify examples of local revitalisation in an era of intensified globalisation.
  • has good skills in reading and writing sections of scientific papers on sociological aspects of rural and remote regions and critically review and discuss basic sociological subjects in an oral and written form.
