APECS and the Arctic Portal visited the University

Last Monday, the master's students in Coastal and Marine Management were given the opportunity to meet with Dr. Jenny Baseman, the director of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists, and Sigmar Arnarson from the Arctic Portal Project, connecting them to scientists and researchers worldwide.

Lunch Lecture: 2D Modelling of Icelandic Snow Avalanches for Hazard Zoning

Friday September 11 at 12.10, after a long summer break, the first Lunch lecture this fall will be held. Eiríkur Gíslason, a building engeneer at the Avalance Research Centre in Ísafjörður, will talk about 2D modelling of Icelandic snow avalanches for hazard zoning. The talk will be in English and will be held in the cafeteria of the University Centre. It is open to all who are interested.

Whale watching in the Westfjords

This coming Thursday the IFAW, International Fund for Animal Welfare, will introduce the results of a survey completed in 2008, on the feasibility of Whale watching in the Westfjords.

A successful symposium on Coastal Zone Management and Marine Spatial Planning came to an end Friday September 4, with lectures given by two of our foreign guests, Lorrain Gray from NAFC Marine Centre in the Shetland Islands, and Claire M. O´Neill from the Cinqe Terra National Park in Italy.

The University Centre of the Westfjords will host a symposium on Coastal Zone Management and Spatial Marine Planning September 3rd and 4th, 2009. The symposium is held in connection with the beginning of the academic year in the master's studies in Coastal and Marine Management at the University Centre.

A new group of master´s students welcomed

This past Saturday The University Centre of the Westfjords was excited to meet and welcome the new CMM class to Ísafjörður. This year the program has doubled in size which is a testament to the success of the program.

Hello Preparatory Students, Goodbye Icelandic students

As usual, August is a busy month at the University Centre. Today we say goodbye to more than a hundred students that have been studying Icelandic with us over the last three weeks. The students will now start their studies in various fields at different Universities in Iceland.

Ocean Wilderness in Theory and Practice

Friday August 21, Brad Barr will give a lecture which he calls Ocean Wilderness in Theory and Practice. In his talk Mr. Barr will discuss his current research, being conducted at the University of Alaska, regarding the application of the concept of "wilderness" to the oceans.
