University of Alaska visits the University Centre

Bad weather and occasional closed roads do not scare away people from University of the Arctic, quite the contrary. As reported in the media, representatives from the University of Alaska are in Iceland for a visit with students and teachers and they have decided to come to the Westfjords to visit the University Centre.

Their ambitious schedule is indeed more or less focused on Reykjavík and the East of Iceland, with visits to ministries, Bessastaðir president's residence and Kárahnjúkar hydro dam. The Institute of the North and the University of Alaska Fairbanks are active members of University of the Arctic network. For this reason they had the idea to include Icelandic UArctic members to their visit - finding out that the University of Akureyri and the University Centre of the Westfjords had been the most active members of the network during recent years. Unfortunately, this time of the year is not the best to invite people for a very short visit to the Westfjords, as traveling is very much dependent on the weather. But these Alaskans are obviously not afraid of dodgy weather conditions and want to learn about the Westfjords not least because of the fact that the energy-provision is different from the Icelandic mainland. Most likely they will be able to relate more to the situation in the Westfjords than in Reykjavík and maybe this applies also the other way round.

As their schedule is tight, they decided to look in on Sunday, 02.12.2012. Gwen Holdmann, Director of the UAF Alaska Center for Energy and Power, will give a lecture and discuss with students and other interested audience on "Energy Issues and Opportunities in Alaska" Sunday, 02.12.2012, at 17:00, University Centre.

We hope that the weather will be calm during the weekend to ensure that our visitors will travel easily to the Westfjords.
