University Festival at Hrafnseyri
On June 17, Iceland's National Day, the University Centre of the Westfjords celebrated a University Festival at Hrafnseyri in Arnarfjörður. This is the third time that the University Centre celebrates on this day on the occasion of the graduation of its master's students in Coastal and Marine Management. This year a pleasant addition was made to the ceremony since a group of distance learning students, studying at the University of Akureyri, joined in to celebrate their graduation. The formal graduation of all the students was on June 9 but since the rector of the University of Akureyri participated in the event on Hrafnseyri he also brought with him the diplomas for all graduation students. In addition to this a group of nurses that graduated from the distance learning program at the University of Akureyri celebrated their 10 year anniversary with us on Hrafnseyri and gave the University Centre a impressive gift of books on this occasion.
Over one hundred people attended the ceremony in Hrafnseyri and it can be safely said that the chapel where the ceremony took place has never been as occupied on this occasion. Fourteen students graduated from the Coastal and Marine Management masters program and eleven students graduated from distance learning programs in nursing, business administration and teaching.
Guðmundur Hálfdanarson, professor in the name Jón Sigurðsson at the University of Iceland directed the ceremony. A few people addressed the gathering, Stefán B. Sigurðsson, rector of the University of Akureyri, Peter Weiss director of the University Centre, Marc L. Miller on behalf of the CMM instructors, Deborah Davies, Lauma Gulbe and Alex Elliott on behalf of the CMM students, Anna Sigríður Jörundsdóttir and Sigrún Sigurðardóttir on behalf of the distance learning students and Jóhann Oddsdóttir on behalf of the nursing alumni that celebrated their 10 year anniversary. Music was performed by Hanna Lára Jóhannsdóttir, flute and Beáta Joó, piano.
