University Centre joins Gegnir
The University Centre of the Westfjords is now in the process of implementing Gegnir, the Union Catalogue for Icelandic libraries. Some other libraries here in the North-Western part of the region are also taking the same step. Gegnir is considered to be a better option than Micromarc, which has been employed up to now, as Icelandic libraries generally use Gegnir, ie most public libraries, all university libraries, high school libaries as well as many special libraries of various institutions. All in all, 300 Icelandic libraries use the Union Catalogue. Joining Gegnir will therefore increase the visibility of the collection and make its resources more accessible.
The University Centre collection is not large, but steadily growing and highly specialized. About 80% of its acquisitions are connected to the Master´s Programme in Coastal and Marine Management and a large part of these resources has previously not been catalogued in Gegnir. Pernilla Rein project manager at the University Centre is responsible for the collection.
Gegnir was first opened in 2003, run and owned by Landskerfi, which is the the Consortium of Icelandic libraries. The company is owned by the Icelandic government together with municipalities around the country. Gegnir is based on Aleph 500, a library system provided by Ex Libris and used world-wide. Among the customers you find many well-known libraries such as the British Library and the Royal Danish Library.
