The Future-Life of a Thesis
This weekend Channel 1 at the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service aired a piece on the show Landinn about an ongoing project which began with a master's thesis research done by Alan Deverell one of our Coastal and Marine Management alumni. Alan's thesis evaluated the feasibility of establishing a recreational diving sector in the Westfjords. A number of partners, such as Matís ltd., The Icelandic Fish Industry Fund, NAVE, and some tourist companies, picked up on Alan's work and continued with some points made in the thesis. On the show that aired on Sunday the local divers Sveinbjörn Hjálmarsson was interviewed about his plans to offer diving tours in the Westfjords in which divers collect food from the ocean floor to cook on the beach or at a nearby restaurant.
Alan Deverell's thesis is a great example of how important the research of CMM students can be when it comes to creating knowledge for the region. It is also a good example of how this knowledge can result in business innovation. Earlier this year the University Centre offered a special practical master's program for such innovative practices called Marine Innovation. We encourage readers to learn more about his program on our website.
