Geomorphology and sedimentology are frequently used in climate change research. Lisa and her colleagues go a step further by comparing drill cores to actual data collected in the Westfjords lakes. The studies indicate that there is a difference between the Baffin Island and the Westfjords. Longer cycles, like The Little Ice Age, had more impact on the Baffin Island, while shorter cycles (80-100 years) seem to have more impact on Iceland. These shorter cycles may be caused by the North Atlantic Oscillation. However, the research is ongoing and the colleagues and students from PSU's Center for the Environment plan to continue their research next spring and each year until 2014.

[mynd 1 h]Hopefully, next spring will be milder and with less snow since the research group experienced all sorts of weathers during their stay in the southerly Westfjords. At least, the University Centre of the Westfjords will warmly welcome them back, regardless of the weather.

Further information about the research can be found here and here.
