More than a decade of Icelandic for foreigners

Close to 70 foreign students are now hitting the Icelandic books in the Ísfjörður region as a part of their Icelandic courses offered by the University Centre of the Westfjords. This is the elevent consecutive summer these courses are taught, they started in 2007 and have long since become a regular part of the August agenda in the vicinity of Ísafjörður.

There are three beginners courses on offer, one in Ísafjörður and two at Núpur in Dýrafjörður, about 30 minutes away from Ísfjörður. Courses for the advanced are only held in Ísafjörður this year. The group of students contains both exchance students and students who intend to study fulltime at one of the Icelandic universities. Also in the group there are true Iceland enthusiasts, people who want to deepen there understanding of the Icelandic language and culture. Some have attended these courses numerous times.

In addition to the regular classroom teaching in the morning students get a hands-on experience with Icelandic in the afternoons through elective courses. where they can participate in a choir, go shopping, learn how to swear in Icelandic and how to ryme - to name a few.

The last day of classes is August 18th and then the student group splits up, either people return back to their home countries or continue with further education in Iceland.
