Lunch Lecture: Techniques and esthetics of snow-shovelling

Shovelling snow is not only tools and muscles, but also technique and determinedness. And not least character and intellectual approach.

Although the Ísafjord-based Icelandic Avalanche Centre's focus is on analysing the snow, the analysis of the ones who are shovelling it might be even more interesting for the general public. The Avalanche Centre pools the country's most experienced specialists on snow and they seem to adhere to a holistic approach, not only dealing with snow from a physical or meteorological angle, but also from a sociological and psychological angle. With a closer look, we might even detect artistic and esthetic aspects in shovelling snow. In any case, it matters who shovels which snow.

On Friday, 13.03.2015, Jón Ottó Gunnarsson and Magni H Jónsson will allow guests of the Lunch Lecture to think about their self-concept by giving an analysis on snow-shovelling: It is more than smoke and mirrors!

Jón Ottó Gunnarsson is hydrologist and oversees measurements of water regimen and other hydrological data for the Icelandic meteorological institute, but, at the avalanche centre, he is surrounded by specialists of frozen water, what obviously shapes his interests. Magni H Jónsson is a specialist on avalanches at the Centre.

UWestfjords lunch lectures are open for the public and start on Fridays at 12.10. This lecture will be given in Icelandic.
