Government funds administered by the University Centre

The University Centre of the Westfjords currently administers three funds on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Security.

The Development Fund for Immigration Issues was founded in 2007 and has been administered by the University Centre since that time. The Fund's goal is to facilitate the process for immigrants to adjust to Icelandic society by enhancing research and development projects in the field of immigration issues. Grants are awarded on an annual basis.

This year the University Centre agreed to administer two more funds for the same ministry. One is a fund launched on the occasion of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, as designated by the European Commission. The aim of the European Year is to raise public awareness and to give a voice to the concerns of people living in poverty and social exclusion. The awarded projects are co-funded and aim at e.g. finding innovative solutions, starting education and training programmes, or at fighting prejudice. The other fund is the Welfare Watch counterbalance fund. The so-called Welfare Watch is a steering committee which was designated to systematically monitor the social as well as the financial consequences of the bank failure and to propose measures to households. The Welfare Watch fund is one of the proposals of the steering committee.

More information about funds and grantees is to be found here on the University Centre website, where you can also read abstracts on the projects.
