Girls and Technology

Today around 30 girls in 9th grade from elementary schools in the northern part of the Westfjords took part in workshops at the University Centre called „Girls and Technology“. The workshops are held by the Reykjavík University in connection with the international „Girls in ICT Day“ celebrated April 27th.

On the iniative‘s website reads: „Girls in ICT Day initiative is a global effort to encourage girls and young women to consider studies and careers in information and communication technologies (ICT). It takes place every year on the fourth Thursday of April. With the number of school girls opting to study technology-related disciplines in decline in most countries worldwide, ITU is committed to championing the catalytic role a tech career can play in creating exciting, far-reaching opportunities for women and girls.“

Similar workshops have been held in Reykjavík in the past and are now also held in Eastern Iceland, Akureyri and here in Ísafjörður. They are lead by female students at Reykjavík University who have formed an assocition for girls in ITU at RU, /sys/tur/. The workshops are also run in cooperation with Skema, a company specializing in education in line with technology with support from researches in psychology, education and computer science.

The University Centre aided in the project by hosting the workshops after wich the girls had the opportunity to visit one of the high tech companies in Ísafjörður, Skaginn 3X.
