Dr. Veronica Méndez Aragón hired as Program Director

The University Centre of the Westfjords has hired a new program director for the Coastal and Marine Management master’s program. The University Centre received 22 applications, of which 12 with a PhD. The application committee decided to hire Dr. Verónica Méndez Aragón for the position.

Verónica Méndez Aragón holds a PhD in Community Ecology from University of East Anglia (U.K.), a Master of Science in Biological Diversity from University of Plymouth (U.K.), a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University (U.S.A.), as well as a Diploma in Marine Environmental Management from International University Study Centre (Spain). Most recently she has worked as a senior researcher at the University of Iceland and the University of East Anglia.

Dr. Verónica Méndez Aragón is an internationally recognized expert in shorebird ecology and engages in productive collaborations across Europe. In the past 5 years, she has published 11 articles in top scientific journals and presented her research extensively at prestigious international scientific meetings and seminars (British Ecological Society, British Ornithologists’ Union, International Ornithological Congress, Wader Study Group, VISTIR).

Most recently she has worked as a senior researcher at University of Iceland, at UI research centre in Laugarvatn, South Iceland. She has worked and published together with colleagues at the Institute of Natural History in the Westfjords and will most certainly be a great asset to the growing research environment of the Westfjords.

She will begin working at the University Centre on October 1st. Until that time Dr. Matthias Kokorsch, program director of Coastal Communities and Regional Development, will be the acting program director of the Coastal and Marine Management program.
