Michael is a consultant in marine and coastal resource management. For the past eight years he has worked in the Pacific Islands and Caribbean on marine resource management, sustainable development and protected areas. He has taught Geographic Information Systems at the University of the South Pacific, and hosted study abroad field trips in marine ecology and climate change in Greenland, Iceland, Belize, and Mexico.

Between 1997 and 2008, Michael represented the Crown on Canadian environmental issues such as flooding, hunting and fishing, Aboriginal treaties, and healthcare. He is lead author of a textbook on Tropical Marine Ecology, and contributor to the Climate Change Adaptation Learning Kit for the Micronesian Challenge
