Free time activities

Here are a few suggestions for activities you may find interesting. We are happy, as well, to make further suggestions that align with your interests. Make sure to bring hiking boots and outdoor clothing that is appropriate for the variable weather, but be aware of the fact that clothes for horse riding must be disinfected when coming to the country.

Ísafjörður and the Westfjords have a lot to offer when it comes to the outdoors and culture.
In Ísafjörður a hike in the Tungudalur valley, with its lush vegetation is a nice choice on a sunny day. There, you also find a 9-hole golf-course. For some historical enlightment, make a visit to the Westfjords Heritage museum, housed in one of the oldest bulidings in Ísafjörður as well as in the country. You may want to end this visit with a dish of the day´s catch at the popular maritime restaurant in one of the neighbouring houses.

If you intend to spend a couple of extra days in the area, you may want to take a trip from Ísafjörður to Vigur island, or a one or two day trip to Hornstrandir nature reserve. The reserve lies to the north of Ísafjörður, across the Ísafjarðardjúp bay. The area can only be reached by boat. The last permanent residents left in the 1960´s, and now nature is reclaiming old cultivated land. If you go, you will be in a wilderness, with no cars, no roads, and no telephone. For participants staying at Núpur, hiking in the vicinity is a great choice. You could hike to the Óþoli mountain, 800 meters above sea level, where there is a breathtaking view over the fjord and the picturesque fishing village of Þingeyri. Alternatively, or up the Mýrafell, 300 meters above sea level, which als offers a beautiful view of the fjord or simply follow the shore to the west from Núpur Skagi.

At Sandar, close to Þingeyri on the opposite side of the fjord to Núpur, there is an equestrian centre, from where horseback-riding trips are offered.

For those who would like to go kayaking, guided trips are offered from Flateyri, 20 km from Ísafjörður. You will be taken around Önundarfjörður, well-known for its rich birdlife as well as the long golden beaches.
