About the Course

The course provides an introduction to the main principles, approaches and issues associated with fishing activities. The present stage of technology used in the marine environment is reviewed with special emphasis on the potentials, limitations, environmental impacts, and future development of marine technology.


Einar Hreinsson holds a position at the Marine Research Institute of Iceland, Ísafjörður branch, as a fisheries Scientist. Mr. Hreinsson has taught similar courses at The University of Akureyrir and at the United Nations University, Fisheries Training Program (UNFTP), in Reykjavík, Iceland.

His main ongoing projects are direct observation of pelagic trawls. Studies of enmeshing and escapement of capelin. Studies of sorting grids for the blue whiting pelagic fisheri and in general fish behaviour and pelagic trawls. Other projects include studies of fish behaviour and experiments with new catching methods. Main reserch interest in general are fish behaviour and fish reactions to fishing gears.
