Conditions for acceptance into the Coastal and Marine Management program are that the applicant must have completed an undergraduate university degree, regardless of if it is a BA, BSc or BEd. Applicants fill out an application form and return it together with supporting documents.

Candidates can come from diverse education and work backgrounds, as the interdisciplinary nature of study is based on many fields; especially in economics, ecology, social sciences and management.

English is the communication and educational language of the program. It is anticipated that applicants from Iceland, Scandinavia and the English-speaking countries possess adequate skills in the language. The same applies to students from universities where all instruction is in English. Other applicants must demonstrate sufficient English skills with recognised tests such as TOEFL, or equivalent.

You can access the online application form here.

Information for UK citizens

During the application period spring 2021, the University Centre of the Westfjords treats citizens of the United Kingdom as citizens of the European Economic Area. However, we urge UK citizens to apply as early as possible in order to have time to fulfill the immigration requirements for student residence permit. See further information on the website of the Directorate of Immigration.

You can access the online application form here

*Please note that the reason for the earlier application deadline of February 15 is the fact that non-EU/EEA citizens need to gather multiple documentations for their student residence permits. This process can be time-consuming. Applications received after the deadline will be considered based on the program capacity, quality of the application and the likelihood of submitting all the appropriate documentation.

The annual registration fee for Coastal and Marine Management at the University Centre of the Westfjords is ISK 150,000 for Icelandic students and those from other EEA/EU countries, and for those who come from countries outside the EEA the registration is ISK 300,000.

The annual fee is collected for each academic year and should be paid by June 30 each year before the coming academic year begins. Students pay the annual fee after they receive a letter of admission.

All international students must register in Iceland or apply for a student permit depending on citizenship.

Students with citizenship outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or European Free Trade Association (EFTA) must apply for a student permit before arrival and be granted an approval from the Directorate of Immigration before traveling to Iceland. Students should apply for a residence permit immediately after receiving their acceptance letter from the University Centre of the Westfjords. A residence permit may be granted for as long as one year and it is the student's responsibility to apply for a renewal.

Please visit the website of the Directorate of Immigration for detailed information.

Citizens from EU/EEA/EFTA countries do not need to obtain a student residence permit to study in Iceland. Full-time students staying in Iceland for longer than six months, should register with the Registers Iceland. Through this application (A-271 EU-nationals / A-257 Nordic nationals) you will receive an Icelandic ID number "kennitala"
